Food Supplement with Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Food Supplement with Omega 3 Fatty Acids

EPA and DHA - the long chain omega-3 fatty acids - are the BIG news in nutritional supplementation today. The research on these vitamin-like nutrients is voluminous. Even the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) advises that “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” The scope of EPA and DHA involvement in healthy cell and tissue function suggests that practically any individual, however healthy, would benefit by supplementing their diet with these essential fatty acids. Super Omega EPA/DHA1Mis unique for its synergy of EPA, DHA, and a patented, three-component antioxidant system. These antioxidants were chosen to give Super Omega its superior oxidative stability. In simple terms this means it has tremendous health benefits, an improved taste and doesn’t cause burping.
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are orthomolecules that are practically vitamins. The healthy body can make small amounts from shorter-chain precursors such as alpha-linolenic acid, but in real life most humans do not effectively biosynthesize them. Fish and fish oils are rich sources of these fatty acids. They can also be derived from other sources such as flaxseed oil, but these alternate sources must first be metabolized in the body to create EPA and DHA. The necessary conversion process has been demonstrated to be very inefficient, even in healthy individuals. As a result, it is thought to be considerably more effective to obtain EPA and DHA directly from fatty fish rather than indirectly through vegetable sources.
The fatty cold-water fish are often found to be contaminated with mercury, dioxins and other pollutants. Due to a superior manufacturing process, the fish oil concentrate found in Super Omega EPA/DHAIM is virtually free from pollutants that contaminate the oceans. It has measured levels of only 0.030 to 0.045 picograms (pg) WHO TEQ (World Health Organization Toxic Equivalents per gram) of oil for dioxins and furans and 0.00 to 0.19 pg WHO TEQ/gm oil for dioxin-like PCBs. Super Omega EPA/DHA1Malso has exceptionally low levels of iron and copper. This results in far greater oxidative stability. Additionally, the levels of arsenic, lead and cadmium are also extremely low. By comparison, crude fish oils often contain up to 200 times greater levels.
The cell is the basic unit of life, and within our cells the majority of life processes occur in or upon cell membranes. EPA and DHA are indispensable structural and functional building blocks for all of these membranes. Held in position by membrane phospholipids, EPA and DHA function (a) to facilitate passage of messages into the cell from the outside (signal transduction); (b) to interact with and regulate nuclear genes; and (c) to serve as substrates for the generation of eicosanoids (prostaglandins) that radiate out from the cell to influence other cells. These functions are in homeostatic balance with the long-chain omega-6 fatty acids in the membranes.
The overall tissue balance between the long-chain omega-3 and omega-6 molecules determines eicosanoid status. This in turn influences the cytokines that manage a great variety of cell- and tissue-level homeostatic coordination. The outcome is a kind of dynamic “set point” for healthy function in that individual. It seems that the higher the omega-3 contents of the cell membranes, the lower that individual’s risk for tissue-level dysfunction.
Current evidence suggests a healthy ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid molecules in our cell membranes is around 1:4. This also happens to be the ratio of naturally occurring EPA and DHA in mother’s milk. The membrane EPA and DHA levels can be routinely measured, most conveniently from red blood cell (RBC) samples. From the membrane percentage of omega-3 molecules (now called the Omega-3 Index) can be predicted that individual’s risk for
    cardiovascular dysfunction.
In addition to the suggested cardiovascular benefits, high-potency combinations of EPA and DHA are said to have many other health benefits. They are thought to support nervous system development in utero, and after birth; they may assist the neuronal, retinal, spermatozoal, and muscle cell performances via membrane fluidity; and they are thought to improve the functioning of the large intestine, joints and other organ systems.
With regard to the brain, ongoing research suggests these fatty acids benefit behavior, learning, memory, and mood. Many of these CNS benefits are linked to the favorable influences on eicosanoid balance, which in turn regulates cytokine balance and so down-regulates the potential for functional aberration. Other benefits come from optimizing membrane fluidity and related characteristics. Deficiencies in omega-3 may combine with inherited abnormalities in membrane function to possibly precipitate regional dysfunction in the brain.
Potent EPA and DHA combination supplements are best to take only when well protected against spontaneous peroxidation. Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are notoriously unstable; their multiple carbon-carbon double bonds making them prone to spontaneous free radical generation. This creates a risk for peroxidizing (going rancid) while in the bottle, or generating tissue peroxidic stress following consumption. Due to a patented deodorization and stabilization technology, there is very little fishy smell or taste with our Super Omega EPA/DHA1'1. More importantly, this results in superior “shelf-life” stability with negligible EPA and DHA loss and only very minimal oxidation. This is achieved through a patented three-component antioxidant system that has virtually addressed and eliminated theses concerns. Our ultra pure EPA and DHA is stabilized with a proprietary combination of ascorbyl palmitate, tocopherols and citric acid.
The established cardiovascular benefits of EPA and DHA are a breakthrough for public health. People in all age groups and risk categories may improve their health and beneficially influence their cardiovascular functions. As mentioned in the first paragraph, in October 2004 the US FDA approved a qualified health claim: “Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.” The American Heart Association (AHA) and Europe’s International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids also acknowledged the possible value of EPA and DHA for primary and secondary coronary heart disease prevention, and for the management of triglyceridemia.
Currently the typical Western diet provides limited EPA and DHA. The AHA recommends a diet that includes fatty fish twice weekly and state on their own website, “However, those with coronary artery disease, may not get enough omega-3 by diet alone.” (see http:/Avww.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4632) If you’re not consuming fatty fish twice weekly or are concerned about heart health, supplementing your diet with American Biologies’ Super Omega EPA/DHA1'1may help to achieve the expected health benefits.
